Where are all the Newfoundlands?

Where are all the Newfoundland puppies? About ten years ago there was a major push by a group of breeders calling themselves “the coven” to eradicate people they didn’t like or their competition through bullying and harassment. Sadly, they were very successful. Now let’s skip forward to present day. Most of these breeders have retired, are in the process of retiring, or have passed on. Because of the years of bullying and harassment there are no new breeders to replace them. During this ten year period the poorly bred Newfoundland community went on breeding mostly unhindered. Unfortunately, you will now find that these dogs have become the majority of the Newfoundland population. So much so that the general Newfoundland dog owner does not even recognize a well bred Newfie when they see one. If you own one of these poorly bred Newfies, please don’t take offense to what I have said here. It doesn’t mean your dog isn’t lovely or doesn’t deserve love or a home. It only means it isn’t a standard Newfie… like a Dalmatian without spots, or a basset with up ears, or miniature Great Dane, these are all fine dogs I’m sure, but they are not what they should be. And after being bred so poorly for so many years, probably carry with them many genetic defects. Now in the time of Covid-19, the older breeders don’t want to leave home (understandably so) to send semen or do breedings. So even those that would still be breeding are on pause. I am contacted daily by people looking for a well bred Newfie puppy, they have been through the breeders lists and rarely (if ever) receive a response. Don’t take this personal, these people are mostly retired or no longer living. It’s a scary time for the Newfoundland dog as a whole. We NEED more good breeders!! But breeding is time consuming, heartbreaking and expensive. Then throw in the bullying and harassment and who would want to get involved in that?? I’m sorry we don’t have any other breeders to send you to. If you do find a breeder, we are happy to help you evaluate litters and pedigrees.

We TRY to give everyone a fair shot at our puppies. Someone we met today is just as viable as someone who has been waiting ten years. We TRY our best to match the best possible puppy to the best possible home, the wait doesn’t mater to us. A puppy who loves the water will go to a home with a pool or near a body of water, if no one with water is applying for that puppy he will stay with us until its best home can be found

If you are not chosen there is NOTHING wrong with you! It just means we didn’t have your perfect match, so please don’t run off to these poorly bred Newfies who will break your heart. It’s better to keep waiting and keep searching! When we do find litters we are MORE then happy to let you know!! If you have questions about our process, other kennels, or Newfie care, please feel free to contact us anytime, night or day, you’re NEVER a bother!!
